I work indoors at the Dunn Building. I sometime feel respect and sometimes I do literacy and I work out on the floor of the Dunn Building.

I have worked at the Dunn building, housework jobs, at a day care center, and the Expositor. I like working with other people rather than in solidarity.

I work in a sheltered work shop. I prefer a factory work.

I work indoors in the workplace. It is cool to work with other people in the workplace. It is in Brantford, Ontario.

I have worked at a grocery store, at Callohans, white rose, the greenhouse, and at the Dunn building. I work with many other people. I work on the weekends and during the week. I like to work with other people the best. You get the job done faster when you work with other people.

i have always worked for a factory style workshop in brantford. i feel my rights have been respected when you have nice staff, that you have dealt with over the years and they are a joy of being around. im a receptionist at my factory and you have the nicest people that you see everyday, and i always get my breaks when i am on the desk. other then that things are really good.

I would like to work as a mechanic. Where I have woked is at the Little Cataraqui Conservation Area. But I didn't get paid. I liked to be outside in the forest. I did feel like I got treated with respect.

I have only volunteered I have not had a job yet.
I would prefer to work outdoors because I like the fresh air.

I worked at quite a few places like the Arc Industries, Bay Beverages, The Fort William Gardens, The General Hospital, Dingwells, ATZ Rentals and The Liqure Store. I worked as a Maintance Man and a cleaner. Now I work at The Super Store and I do cardboard bailling and cleaning out of the carts. I work indoors.

I've always worked in a friendly environment. However since 1990 I've been a stay at home mom raising my family of 5 boys. My youngest is 12yrs old and was born with a congenital heart defect and will have to have a heart transplant with in the next year.

*It is important to have rights in the workplace so that you can work effectively. You need to be respected, have breaks, and be paid for work.

*Rights in the workplace means I get to work in the community, I am safe, I am in a paying job and I have a respectful boss.

*I truly think that rights in the workplace means that both parties, the employer and employee, treat each other with respect and honesty,that any issue can be prevented or solved. In the situation that I have been involved in for the past 30 years, the employer and I, I believe, have been compatible and have had a very successful relationship.

*The rights in the workplace means to me I feel safe, because I know that I will be safe in the work shop. I have worked at A&P for 5 years. I also worked at the farm for 7 months. I felt respected. They are nice to me. The boss was nice to me when I used to work there. I like working there. I want to work a Burger King.

*I have worked on the farm with Ross and I am hoping to get back to the job because, I really like it. I worked outside and inside. I would prefer to work outside, although the job that I work at right now is inside. I could just feel inside my soul that I was respected on the farm.

*I feel means that I can be protected against unsafe situations in the workplace/employer, that I have a right to speak for myself.

rights in a wheelchair

I want to know about safety in the work place and wheel chair access. What are the rules and rights that someone in a wheelchair in the workplace must be aware of and/or follow. What laws must the employer follow?

I think that the rules the employer must follow come under the Human Rights Code Duty to Accommodate rules.

Basically, the Duty to Accommodate ... "requires employers to identify and eliminate rules that have a discriminatory impact. Accommodation means changing the rule or practice to incorporate alternative arrangements that eliminate the discriminatory barriers."

"A person who is denied accommodation can file a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Complaints can be made in relation to any aspect of employment, including pre-employment testing, the working environment, training and promotions."

the 3 hour rule

I'm a full time worker. Are they allowed to give you 2-3 hour shifts?

I am not sure if this answers your question but I found this Ontario information here:

What happens if an employee comes in to work his or her shift, but is sent home after working less than three hours?

When an employee is required to report to work, but works less than three hours, he or she must be paid whichever of the following amounts is the highest:

• three hours at the minimum wage, or
• the employee's regular wage for the time worked.

For example, if an employee is paid $10.00 an hour and works only two hours, he or she is entitled to three hours at minimum wage (e.g., $7.15 x 3 = $21.45)-instead of two hours at his or her regular wage (10.00 x 2 = $20.00).

This is called the "three-hour rule."

The rule does not apply to:

• students (including students over 18 years of age)
• employees whose regular shift is three hours or less
• where the cause of the employee not being able to work at least three hours was beyond the employer's control.

Special rules may apply to certain industries. Please refer to the ESA (Employment Standards Act) and regulations.

B-Ball Squad

I enjoyed watching the Learning is Power B-Ball Squad video.

As a tutor I feel that this video sums up everything that literacy programs are all about. They are about the learners.

Learning is Power expresses some real concerns that new learners have when they come to any Adult Learning Centre. They experience anxiety, frustration, nervousness and uncertainty.

The video indicates that adult learners attend for various reasons. Some want to read to their kids and grandkids. They wish to be better able to communicate with family and friends and they also want to be exposed to vocabulary that they may not be familiar with. It is also very important for adult learners to feel comfortable filling out forms and applications. They wish to have a comfort level when dealing with various people and they feel it is very important to express themselves properly.

Learning is one of the best ways to develop your reading, writing, math and social skills. An individual feels very powerful when they can face the world on a daily basis and not be made to feel like they are of no value. Self-esteem is also a very valuable lesson experienced within all Adult Learning Centers. Self-esteem is a very valuable asset in helping people understand what power is and how it can help you maintain a very positive lifestyle.

My Blog Rubert’s Leap In Reading

My blog is to help other people that can't Read and Write. It may give them the courage to start their own blog or to join my. I talk about, In 2004 I didn't know how to read more than two and three letter words, even those words were hard for me. I didn't even know anything about computer's. To show the people that they are not the only ones out there that can't Read and Write. And remember always keep an open mind for mistakes that is why they put rubbers on the end of Pencils.

my power to learn

The power of Learning is to achieve some goals
that you want to do in life
and there are times when we have to try some new things
like making speech and talking about it to the Pupil
and that is one power of learning

and one of thing is to be able to keep trying to learn how to able to learn how to read words and write them down

and when I saw the video I thought it was good when the learners said that she couldn’t read or write

and also when I watch it I thought we should all have challenges in Literacy to be able upgrade your skills

a conscientious mind

To develop power is learning to have a conscientious mind and learning by different mindsets.

Through different mindsets is to have a good outlook on your life. Learning is a difficult process to learn through philosophers before you can learn from them. Every day is a process of learning.

the video

I really like the video. When I first saw it I let as many staff, learners and volunteers know about it as I could. I let them know I thought it was important to watch. I first found out about it on the discussion boards here at Alpha Route.

Since I have known about the video for some time my excitement about it is not as strong. I would like to see courses that would help to develop leadership skills....such as project management 101. I would also like to know how many people challenged with literacy don't vote and see about running a campaign to encourage our peers to vote. I think if more people understood what the referendum vote was really about they would have made sure they voted.

I know I am off topic. This has been a busy week and I am tired.

the ultimate power

The only power a person needs is over their own life. People lose their power or feel powerless when they do not know what to do or how to do it. By learning they increase their independence and thus their self-confidence. This makes them feel in control over their lives, makes them better able to make decisions that will be positive - enhance their lives. The more you learn the more able you are to make good decisions.

to overcome your fear

How I feel about myself - all my life I thought that I was going nowhere. When you can't read very well it puts a big hole in your life. You think that you will never be able to get a job, to support yourself. Since coming back to school I don't feel that way. When you see on paper that you are going ahead, it feels good inside. To have that power, control over what is going to happen. I have always hid that I couldn't read. Now I don't have to pretend that I am someone I'm not. I am not ashamed that I have a hard time reading. I have confidence, the more I learn, the more I have control, and the more I want!
